I thought I would reinforce what they are trying to tell us about this part of our PPE. We all posses 5 human senses. Under real fire ground conditions, we lose all but the ability to hear and to a lesser extent touch, made difficult by our heavy gloves. Sight is out of the question when we enter enclosed areas of operations. Fogged up mask and heavy smoke conditions! Taste and smell? If we don our SCBA correctly all we will get is clean fresh air. I can not stress the importance of the low air warning alarms. When they activate it is time to evacuate. Do not get comfortable with the idea that “just a little longer” or “just a little further” we will have this fire in the bag. I did once and ended up coming down a flight of stairs head first after running completely out of air for having just such thoughts. Did it hundreds of times before and did OK. Only took once to change my way of thinking. Not a good way to learn. Steve
